Excisions
Skin LesionsWhat are excisions?
Most lesions, like unwanted moles, lipomas, cysts, or skin tags, are harmless, but they can be uncomfortable and unattractive. Some lesions may be cancerous, and removal may be recommended. All lesions removed are sent to a pathologist for a definitive diagnosis.
Excision means the removal of an offending skin lesion by cutting it out. Excisions are only done once the skin is numbed and usually leave little scarring, as Joyce is committed to the best possible cosmetic outcome.
What types of lesions can be excised?
Skin lesions like moles, lipomas, cysts, or skin tags, can be excised in simple in-office procedures. If you have a suspicious lesion that looks cancerous or precancerous, Joyce may recommend full excision to obtain a pathological diagnosis. Skin cancer is highly treatable if found early.
Moles
Moles develop just about anywhere on your skin, from your scalp to your toes. Though you might think theyre always brown, they can also be flesh-colored, pinkish, black, or red. Theyre usually harmless, but some can become cancerous over time.
Excision of moles usually involves removing the lesion under local anesthetic. You might choose to have a mole removed because its cosmetically unappealing or it rubs uncomfortably on clothing.
Skin tags
Skin tags are growths of excess skin. They range in size and contain fat cells, nerve cells, and core fibers.
Though harmless, skin tags grow in places you just dont want them, like your neck, armpits, and groin. They may catch on jewelry or just make you feel self-conscious. Skin tags are typically removed through shaving or snipping. They may reappear but can always be retreated.
When should I worry about skin lesions?
Most skin lesions are nothing to worry about, but some could be a sign of skin cancer. Moles may be cancerous if they are asymmetrical, have irregular borders, change in color, or grow in size.
Also, be concerned if you have new red or pink growths, shiny white bumps, or waxy lesions. Joyce will advise you if excision is the right step.
